West Essex U15 20Twenty Finals Day Wed 17th Aug 2011

Semi Final V South

South won the and toss chose to bat.  Scoring freely from the outset, they made good use of the 6 over powerplay reaching 47 at the fall of the first wicket in the 8th over. The West bowling and fielding performance seemed lethargic, neither bowling as well as they had in previous games nor fielding with any energy. Important catches were dropped  and whilst wickets fell regularly South maintained a good tempo throughout their innings. Sam South once again starred with the ball taking 4 wickets for 21 in his four over allowance. Others were more expensive though and South punished West for their rather sloppy performance posting a competitive 141 for 8 containing 12 4`s & 2 6`s.

The quality of this West side is that it always seems to find a little bit more when put under pressure. The plan was to ensure that we never fell behind the run rate in the chase and with Reece Hussain (43) pulling the strings, the chase was impressive. Whilst Hussain was the mainstay, all the batsmen contributed (Monk,13. Taylor,19. Malins 23.Richardson 20.), so when Hussain was dismissed with the score at 104, the tempo was maintained by Max Malins and Ben Richardson who took West over the line in just 17.3 overs. Given the lethargic start, a pretty conclusive victory.

Final V Central

A fitting season finale, given that both teams had been unbeaten in the 40 over competition, with their decider thwarted by the lightning at Saffron Walden a fortnight earlier.

This time skipper Scanlon called correctly, won the toss and we batted on a wicket beginning to take spin. Though West lost Josh Monk early, Reece Hussain and Addison  Davis ensured the 6 over powerplay was utilised reaching 40 before Hussain was dismissed trying to hit over the top in the 6th. Davis (35) this time took lead role batting aggressively before following Hussain to the pavilion with the score at 56 in the 10th. Once again Tom Taylor (19) and Max Malins (28) batted sensibly through the middle overs, running hard and punishing the bad ball, they set up the final overs for an aggressive finale with wickets in hand. Mike Scanlon needs no second invitation in these circumstances and scored quickly to set up a total as he has done on several other occasions this season. His 9 ball 21 was the other significant contribution in our 20 over total of 133.

133 was competitive but Central are a very strong side and the next 20 overs would give either side the bragging rights of having an unbeaten season. Opener Ali (55) provided the momentum in an excellent start as Central reached 42 for 1 in the powerplay. However West felt the turning wicket would provide the key to success and the plan for the spinners to bowl the majority of the overs (12 in all) proved cunning as all the Central batsmen other than Ali struggled to maintain momentum. The West spinners (Davis, Richardson and South) all bowled well conceding 55 runs and taking 3   wickets in their 12 overs between them. Ali`s innings had however given Central a good foundation and at 90 for 3 after 13 overs they were in a good position needing 44 from 7 at just over 6 runs an over.  The West fielding performance was much more professional than it had been in the semi final and this combined with intuitive field placing and score board pressure would make it difficult for the strong Central batting lineup. The introduction of Josh Monk to bowl the death overs proved vital. Monk (4-19-4) bowled beautifully, full and straight. When they missed he hit and the Central batmen found the run rate rising and with few balls to hit, just could not find the answers. The Central effort was slowly strangled, 33 were needed from 4, 29 from 3, 21 from two and finally 13 from the last. Monk snuffed any chance of victory and Central finished 125 for 7.

The game proved a wonderful season finale, played at a high standard by two unbeaten sides battling for supremacy. Whilst West were unable to complete a 40 over District Grand Slam, they remained unbeaten all season and won the 20/20 competition. They can take great pride in their achievements.

Well done one and all. Every player has contributed in what has been an excellent team effort from a group of players that have been a pleasure to work with.

West Essex U15 v Central U15 Wed 3rd Aug 2011

The picturesque Anglo American Playing Field, Saffron Walden hosted the final 40 over Inter District fixture of the season. With both the West and Central U15 teams unbeaten, the game was in effect the U15 District Championship decider a billing the game more than lived up to.

On an excellent batting pitch Central won an important toss and chose to bat.

The Central openers, Turner (26) and Everett (15) started well putting on 42 in the first ten before the ever reliable Sam South had Turner caught by Scanlon, George Kenny dismissed Everett caught behind shortly after, reducing Central to 46 for 2. When Goldsmith was bowled by Addison Davis in the 17th over, West had an opportunity to grab the initiative. However Central wrested back the initiative as the two Clark`s batted with authority putting on 56 for the 4th wicket without alarm until Ben Gallop trapped M.Clark (25) LBW, with the score at 126 in the 26th over.  The West attack gave nothing away, all bowling with control with excellent support in the field. However the combination of a good batting track, fast outfield and quality batting made life tough. At times it looked as though Central might get away, but the West side refused to buckle and despite no further wickets falling in the innings, toughed it out and the Central innings closed at a gettable 213-4 with Henry Clark 72 no and Pottinger 45 no. West could be very pleased with their fielding performance and felt they had kept themselves in the game.

The West innings started poorly with the early loss of Addison Davis, bowled for 5. Will Clark (16) and Reece Hussain (59) put on 32 for the second wicket before Clark was bowled by Southgate in the 11th over.  The sides could not have been more evenly balanced, Central had been 46 for 2 in the 11th over, West were 45 for 2 in the same over. Max Malins joined Hussain at the crease and the innings progressed nicely to 101 in the 21st when Malins poked one to midwicket. Ben Gallop got a good one first up and West were 101 for 4. Storm clouds had been circling menacingly around the ground for some time now and everything seemed to happen at once. Gilley was dismissed cheaply, led by Hussain had West progressed to 127 in the 27th, scoring at the required rate, when Hussain was unluckily run out as the bowler tipped a Scanlon straight drive onto the stumps.

The game was in the balance, when if the game against Met had been called off due to the fear of arrows from the archery club, what happened next was terrifying….. Amidst a deafening clap of thunder the ground was struck by lightning, the boys felt the strike pass through the ground beneath them and one fielder had sparks fly from his studs ! With the boys safety of paramount importance the game was abandoned and with it the possibility of the first ever West grand slam lost.

MOM: Reece Hussain, led from the front with an assured 59 which put us in a match winning position before being most unluckily run out.

West Essex U15 v Metropolitan Thurs 28th July 2011

Whitbread Sports Ground hosted the third of our Representative fixtures on a lovely July afternoon. Confusion was the watchword of the day, initially with the ground location as a number of the team went to the wrong ground and were late to arrive and later with the result of the game!

Skipper Mike Scanlon started the day well, calling correctly and West duly had first knock. The early exchanges went the way of Metropolitan District. Both Joel Moscow and Reece Hussain fell early leaving West District in trouble at 13 for 2. Addison Davis (28) and Tom Taylor (30) set about restabilising the innings, but when Addison chipped one to deep midwicket in the 19th over, Metropolitan were still in the ascendancy at 52 for 3. The arrival of Max Malins (69) proved to be the decisive moment in the game, batting with Tom (who was unluckily run out by the bowler after a Malins straight drive) and Josh Monk, Max`s innings swung the match. Max added 48 with Tom and after careless shot selection cost Ben Richardson his wicket, 68 with Josh. The Monk /Malins partnership of 68 in 8 overs was as invaluable as it was impressive, both playing positively, exercising intelligent shot selection whilst rotating the strike. When Josh was caught at cover in the 36th over the total had reached 171 for 6. The final four overs saw the dismissal of Max, looking to increase the run rate and a further 29 runs, giving West a competitive 40 over total of 200 for 8.

Metropolitan started well reaching 44 in the 11th over before losing their first wicket.  The introduction of Josh Monk (6-6-2) and Matt Carter (6-6-1) changed the course of the innings. The pair bowled magnificently, exerting pressure with their unerring accuracy, they bowled in tandem for 12 overs, conceding just 12 runs and taking 3 wickets. The Metropolitan innings lost all momentum and at the conclusion of their spells, had meandered to 67 for 3 in the 23rd over, with the run rate now nearly 8 an over.

Despite a solid, well constructed innings of 46 not out from G.Sagoo, the Metropolitan number three, spin twins Sam South (8-33-1) and Benji Richardson (6-21-3) supported by sound catching from Joel Moscow and Matt Carter were in the process of finishing the job when confusion once again reigned. The local Archery Club had booked the ground and were insistent on beginning their session. With the Metropolitan task reaching impossible proportions (86 required from just 4 overs with 3 wickets in hand) the Metropolitan coach saw the sense in not dodging the arrows and conceded the match!

Whilst brought to a rather unsatisfactory conclusion, the result was more than satisfactory as despite one or two wobbles, the game was won comprehensively. The Representative side have now won three out of three, with one to play. The first ever West Essex Grand Slam is now a real possibility.

MOM: Max Malins match winning innings would certainly merit the MOM award, however on this occasion he was unlucky enough to be competing with Josh Monk`s all round MOM performance of 6 overs 2 wickets for just 6 runs along with an innings exhibiting maturity and no little skill, sharing in a partnership which underpinned the West victory.

West Essex U15 v South U15 Tue 31st May 2011

The West Essex U15 2011 Representative season began with an away trip to Rankins CC to play South District. The wicket looked good to bat on despite the fact that there had been early morning rain and Skipper Mike Scanlon had no hesitation in batting having called correctly.

Addison Davis (60) and Joel Moscow (35) batted excellently, consistently putting away the bad ball, scoring at an even 5 an over in their 100 opening partnership in 20 overs.  At this point West looked in an excellent position to set an unassailable target, however Joel was unluckily caught down the legside and Addison followed quickly leaving West at 114 for 2. Reece Hussain and Max Malins set about rebuilding the innings, taking the total to 156 in the 30th over. Reece`s run out whilst looking to up the tempo, was followed by a mini collapse as West lost five wickets in the next seven overs whilst adding just 22 runs. Enter skipper, Mike Scanlon, who smashed 31 in just 23 balls, assisted by a breezy Sam South cameo (16), West posted a competitive total of 217.

The opening attack of Mike Scanlon (6-2-10) and Charlie Turner (6.1-3-22) bowled with great control, as South found runs to come by, progressing to just 26 for 2 after 11 overs. The South innings failed to gain momentum as Sam South (8-3-19) wheeled away at one end, whilst George Kenny (5-0-21) and Ben Richardson (6-0-23) kept it tight at the other.  The pressure told, South found it difficult to break the stranglehold reaching 95 for the loss of 5 wickets by the 30th over. The introduction of the leg spin of James Brown (4-3-16) along with the Charlie Turner brought things to a speedy conclusion as South were bowled out for 116, giving West a convincing 101 run victory.

MOM: Addison Davis , whose positive 60 gave the West innings the foundation to set our winning total.

West Essex U15 v North U15 Thurs 2nd June 2011

Stansted CC hosted the second of the half term Representative fixtures on a beautiful early June afternoon. Stansted is renown for high scoring matches and having won the toss it was vital we posted a good total.

Addison Davis (20) and Joel Moscow (14) once again batted positively putting on 43 in just  6 overs. The introduction of Vanhoutteghem and Hood changed the impetus of the match,  immediately dismissing both openers before the score reached 50. The pair bowled excellently, forcing Reece Hussain and Tom Taylor to play conservatively in a passage of play that had a great influence on the result of the game. Despite being put under enormous pressure the pair battled through until Reece (11) was caught and bowled by Hood at the conclusion of the pairs 6 over spells. The arrival of Benji Richardson gave the West innings impetus, scoring a superb  57 at almost a run a ball, Benji set up the likelihood of a competitive total being reached. Despite never being at his best Tom Taylor (35) battled on and the pair put on 92 for the 4th wicket before Ben was caught and bowled with the total at 158 in the 32nd over. West still needed to push on to capitalise on all the hard work done by the top order and capitalise they did. Josh Monk hit a blistering 32 in just 20 balls, whilst Mike Scanlon once again struck the ball sweetly, scoring 21 in just 12. When George Kenny hit the last ball of the innings for 6, West had reached 231 for 7 in their allotted overs.

A sound start would have secured a comfortable win, but despite Matt Carter (7.2-3-54) taking two early wickets, perhaps borne out of a little overconfidence, West started poorly. The North early order batted aggressively reaching 66 in just the 8th over. The introduction of Josh Monk (7-1-17) and Sam South (8-2-23) restored some order and slowly West clawed the game back, bowling with economy whilst taking wickets at regular intervals, North were reduced to 135 for 6 after 28 overs. With the notable exception of Tom Taylor who took two fine leg side catches and kept excellently the West fielding performance was largely lethargic and once again over confidence threatened to creep in. North refused to lie down, catches were dropped and over aggressive fields set leading to a much closer result than looked likely. Needing over ten an over at one point, the North tail wagged to great effect taking the total to 213 as Matt Carter began the last over. A single from the first ball and a run out from the second finally saw West over the line, winning by a rapidly shrinking 17 run margin.

MOM: Benji Richardson, would on most occasions have made a more than worthy MOM, scoring a vital 57, bowling 4 overs 1 for 16 and taking a sharp catch at midwicket. However Sam South`s contribution to the West U15 Squad & Representative teams unbeaten start to the season has been quite exceptional. Whilst he goes about the business of left arm spin in a quiet understated, uncomplicated fashion his figures in the first three games cannot be overstated, bowling  21 overs , taking 6 wickets for just 57 runs. His wickets coming at just 9.5 a piece at an economy rate of 2.71 per over

West Essex U15 v Saffron Walden U15 Mon 25th April 2011

The West Essex season started with a Squad match against a very strong Saffron Walden U15 team who had been unbeaten the previous season at the picturesque Saffron Walden ground on a sunny if somewhat breezy April afternoon.

Saffron Walden won the toss and chose to bat, although they lost opener Dan Proctor, bowled by Charlie Turner early in the innings, they made good early progress, reaching 50 in the 12th over for the loss of just their opener. Despite an accurate spell from first change, Will Aitken (5-0-1-14), Walden had progressed to 93 for the loss of just two wickets at the 20 over drinks break.

The game could at this point have got away from West Essex, but there followed a passage of play when Elliott Copping-Jones (5-0-0-15) and Sam South (5-0-1-15) bowled excellently in tandem and supported by some excellent fielding and well set fields, restricted Walden to just 120 after 26 overs.

Despite their strong position, with wickets in hand on an excellent batting track, Walden were unable to take the game away from West, thwarted as West bowled with control, set good fields and were busy in the field.  The innings closed on 199 for 5 after the allotted 40 overs, setting up a challenging run chase.

The West reply faltered briefly, losing Henry Merrick for 10 in the fourth over, but John Gilley and Joel Moscow batted sensibly taking West to 63 before John Gilley (16) was caught in the covers in the 12th over. Joe Barrett went swiftly, caught at midwicket, bringing Ben Gallop to the crease. Joel Moscow continued to bat with great maturity, defending resolutely whilst hitting the bad ball to the boundary, slowly but surely the partnership between he and Ben Gallop blossomed. The pair batted excellently, whilst keeping the scoring rate at the required five an over throughout, passing 100 in the 20th over and 150 in the 30th.  By the 33rd over the game appeared in the bag, the partnership had put on 110 as the total reached 173 for 3. With Joel Moscow bearing down on a 100, only now did the partnership lose it`s way a little as the question of whether Joel would make his 100 before the winning total was reached reared it`s head. With the West total on 197 and Moscow on 96, the match looked set to reach a fairytale end, Moscow swang – and missed ! Dismissed within two of the target for an excellently constructed 96. Ben Gallop finished the game with another well struck boundary to finish on an unbeaten 58, having also played his part in the victory.

All in all a very pleasing start to the season.

MOM: Joel Moscow, who skippered with increasing confidence, fielded excellently and scored a match winning 96 into the bargain.

West Essex U15 Squad v East Herts U15 Sunday 26th June 2011

The West Squad team had been somewhat hamstrung due to the availability of players because of Club Matchplay commitments and therefore were already playing with two players from the U13 squad, when Luke Barkes had to withdraw late due to illness leaving the team with just ten men.  Arriving  at the Jobbers Wood venue on a beautiful June afternoon and with temperatures peaking in excess of 30 degrees, skipper Will Clark was  delighted to win the toss and put the East Herts team into the field.   The previously wet conditions, meant a combination of a slightly wet wicket, lush outfield and long boundary would make run scoring difficult.

Will Clark (12), Joe Barrett (20) and John Gilley (12) all batted fluently, taking West to 53, but all had perished by the 13th over. With just 9 wickets to lose, consolidation was required and though there was a blip when Bertie Hughes was dismissed cheaply, consolidation was achieved in an excellent partnership between Max Malins (18) and Ben Gallop who played particularly sweetly off the back foot in making 24.  Jonny Brace played sensibly and James Patterson added some late impetus as the innings concluded on a competitive total of 137.

With just 10 men in sweltering heat, West Essex were up against it. Will Aitken and Sreerag Radhakrishnan bowled accurately in their opening spells and Sreerag was rewarded with an early wicket as the opening partnership put on just 13 in the first 5 overs. Jonny Brace`s first three overs were all maidens as West continued to make progress difficult with consistent, accurate bowling. A.Abeywickrema and T.Makin however batted with great resolve and at the second drinks break at 30 overs, no further breakthroughs had been made. The West fielding performance had been stoic, the bowling continued to be tight, Jonny Brace and Ben Gallop bowled endless dot balls, supported by eager fielding, the 10 men refused to lie down.  As a result the East Herts innings, despite only losing one wicket, failed to create any momentum reaching just 92 and with the required rate 4.5 runs an over, all the West hard work had kept them in the game.

Will Aitken made the vital breakthrough having Makin caught behind by Bertie Hughes immediately after the drinks break. James Patterson, having not been at his best in his earlier spell, came back strongly and bowled well under pressure whilst Ben Gallop continued to be miserly at the other end, strangling the East Herts innings and with the run rate rising, wickets tumbled. In the end East Herts, despite an excellent 69 by A.Abeywickrema, fell 13 runs short, finishing 124 for 8.

The 10 man West side had just refused to buckle and should be very proud of their hard earned victory, another excellent performance. The Under 15 group continue their unbeaten season, four matches, four wins to date.

MOM:  A real team performance in which all ten played their part, our two U13 players Jonny Brace and Sreerag Radhakrishnan deserve special mention. However Ben Gallop gets the final vote, following a fluent batting performance with a match winning bowling spell of 8-1-19-4.
